If you are looking for a relaxing time during a visit to Bangkok, i would recommend a visit to Lumpini park. In amongst the high rise buildings of Bangkok Lumpini park is located in the heart of the city and is easy to get to.
How do i get to Lumpini park?
The Silom metro station that brings you out right outside one of the main gates and in front of the King Rama VI monument. Located just behind this is the main gate to enter the park. Other ways you can get here are by taxi or Tuk-tuk. Depending on your driver they will take you to one of the car parking areas that are located throughout the park. The below map will give you an idea of where you may be when you get here.
The park opens at 04:30 each day and will close at around 21:00 in the evening. This gives the park rangers time to clean and prepare the park for the following day.
Lumpini Park attracts thousands of visitors each day and is free to enter. Most visitors are visiting as this is a great place to get to exercise. You will often find joggers, tai-chi classes and many other aerobic activities going on during the day. But most people just enjoy a stroll around the park. If you want to join in on these activities then you will be welcome to do so, although these tend to be done during the early part of the day when the temperatures are cooler.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can hire a swan themed paddle boat and go for a leisurely float around the lakes of lumpini park. Be aware that this activity is not free, but if you are after an experience then it is worth it.
Another great thing about Lumpini park is the wildlife you will encounter. It is quite unusual to find this level of diversity as you will encounter everything from duck and geese to giant lizards just roaming freely around the park. To find this in the heart of a city is something i had never encountered before outside of a zoo.
As you stroll round the park on any of the many pathways you will find many areas to sit and relax and take in the surroundings. If you are planning to take a stroll around Lumpini park i would recommend that you carry a large bottle of water with you, especially if you are not accustomed to the excessive heat of Bangkok. There are plenty of places to buy water located throughout the park.
Why not bring a picnic with you when you visit Lumpini park, there are lots of great locations to sit and enjoy the great views on offer. There are also ample seating areas that are undercover should you decide the heat is too much. These areas can get quite busy in and around lunchtime as office workers will often come and enjoy their lunch in the park.
Based on my experience of Lumpini park, i will definitely revisit next time i am in Bangkok.
